PARKS AND YOUTH ACTIVITIES

Ideas get better when we work together! Christian has been involving residents in improving our parks and creating community gardens for the last 15 years.

Christian got her start in community work in Wilmington working with neighbors to create the community garden at the Rodney Reservoir. That led to the launch of West Side Grows Together, which Christian organized in collaboration with dozens of community-based organizations, including civic associations, nonprofits, and churches.

Christian coordinated the development of the West Side Revitalization plan, involving over 650 residents in identifying priorities for the positive change in our community.

One of the top priorities that came out of that planning process was improving our parks. Working with neighbors, Christian developed a model for engaging residents in park design, which led to improvements at Father Tucker, Connell St, Fourth St, Cool Spring, and Tilton Parks.

Residents across the 5th District understand the need for more activities for our youth. As your Council member, Christian will work hard to make sure the City expands its summer jobs program and invests in community-based organizations so that the youth of our community have more opportunities to learn, have fun, and achieve their potential.

A Strong Advocate:

When the community learned that the City of Wilmington was planning to spend $1 million in public dollars to demolish the Rodney Reservoir in order to sell it for private development, Christian volunteered with Green For the Greater Good, a resident association that led a successfully advocacy effort for the Rodney Reservoir remain a public park. Christian has spoken up at City Council to keep the Rodney Reservoir safe, public, and green.

As an appointed member of the Rodney Reservoir Advisory Committee, Christian brought her enthusiasm and experience in resident-driven design to make sure YOU, the residents, had a say in creating the design for a new community- and nature-based park.
